Utilizing the right fertilizer at the right time.

Fertilizers……..they are very confusing for many. There are many different formulations on the market with as many different claims about their quality and timelines on their application. A trip to any retail location can get even the knowledgeable homeowner confused with all the variations of fertilizers available.

The formulation noted on fertilizer bags relates to the amount of each specific nutrient. All fertilizer bags have three numbers. The first number is the amount of nitrogen (N), the second number is the amount of phosphorous (P) and the third number is the amount of potassium (K). For instance, a bag of 7-7-7 fertilizer contains 7 percent nitrogen 7 percent phosphorous, and 7 percent potassium.

Wagner utilizes a special blended, custom ordered, slow-release granular formulation for our Spring and Fall fertilizer applications –  20-0-20 with 50% slow-release nitrogen. Our experiential learning for over 30 years, along with research and locally completed soil tests, we have found this formulation to be of excellent value giving great results. The only time we vary from this formulation in the Spring is when we have over-seeded. Then we utilize a lower nitrogen product (so there is no burning of the new seedlings), and add a percentage of phosphorus – which enhances root growth in the new seedlings.

For our mid-season fertilizer, we use a liquid product with 15% nitrogen and 12% humic acid. Humic acid is nutrient rich, making it a great fertilizer for your lawn. Humic helps boost microbial activity and improves soil texture and water retention – especially important in the heat of summer.

Be cautious of lawn care companies that have “econo” or low-end programs where they may apply a low quality fertilizer. These programs may be cheaper, but they are not good value for your investment.
